The focus of this ride is on practical errands that can be accomplished by bicycle—like going grocery shopping. Our meet up spot will be at the Condon Shell on Mystic Valley Parkway, site of the Medford Farmers Market which pops up there every Thurs., 3–7 p.m., from June to October. Get there a little early and you can do some shopping and get something good to eat before the ride.
From there we will ride on neighborhood streets to Whole Foods Medford and then loop back by way of the new multi-use path along the Mystic River to Ebisuya Japanese Market in Medford Square.
Taking Riverside Avenue towards Wellington we'll take a detour on Ship Avenue to see how the proposed Clippership Connector path could be routed and see why it will create a safer, more enjoyable alternative route. We'll also visit the future site of Wegman's, currently under construction in the center of the Meadow Glen Mall.
At Fellsway Plaza we'll go past the Stop and Shop and Aldi markets and then arrive back at the Condon Shell by 8:15 p.m. by way of paths in MacDonald and Riverbend parks and local streets.
Our route will include some challenging intersections and roads. As we do on all of our instructional rides, we'll demonstrate and discuss strategies and tactics for safely navigating them. All participants will receive a free copy of the Bicycling Street Smarts Guide. Depending on skill level, interests and size of our group the route may be modified to suit.
Sunset will occur at 8:20 p.m. on Thursday. Massachusetts state law requires that a front light and a rear light or red reflector be used when riding one half hour after sunset. Riders 16 and under are required to wear a helmet. We strongly recommend that everyone have front and rear lights, a helmet and water bottle for this ride.
Extra water and snacks will be provided. In the event of severe weather the ride with be rescheduled.
The ride will be led by Patrick Bibbins, chair of the Medford Bicycle Advisory Commission and a League of American Bicyclists instructor.
